1 Corinthians 12:12–20
Better Together Than Apart

Every church has a generational divide. Ours is no different. In this first message of the Better Together series, Pastor John Hester opens 1 Corinthians 12:12–20 and addresses the tension head-on — not with a compromise, but with the Word of God.

The Big Idea: You belong in the body of Christ because God put you there — and so does everyone else.

Paul's argument is simple and devastating to every complaint we carry. The Spirit of God is the one who baptizes every believer into this body. God himself set every member in their place, as it pleased him. That means the older member who has given decades to this church was placed here by God — and so was the young family that arrived six months ago. Same sovereign God. Same deliberate act. No accident.

We talk honestly about what happens when we forget that — when one generation vies for the church it wants instead of functioning in the church God built. And we ask the question every member needs to answer: Am I faithfully functioning where God placed me?

In This Message: 00:00 Introduction — The Hard Conversation The generational divide is real. We're naming it.

  • The Spirit Made Us One (1 Cor. 12:12–13) Every believer entered this body the same way — by one Spirit, through faith.
  • The Lie We Tell Ourselves (1 Cor. 12:14–17) The foot's complaint and the ear's complaint — self-rejection rooted in comparison.
  • God Placed Every Member (1 Cor. 12:18) "But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him."
  • The Tabernacle Illustration (Exodus 31:1–6) Bezaleel, Aholiab, and every craftsman — placed by God to build one dwelling place.
  • Application — The Wrong Question and the Right One — Stop asking: "Is this the church I want?" Start asking: Am I faithfully functioning where God placed me?

We are not better apart. We are better together — because that is what God built.
