Let me be honest with you.
If you're searching for a family church in Bedford, Virginia, you've probably already visited a few websites that all say roughly the same thing. Friendly people. Great kids' programs. Come as you are. And maybe you're wondering — does any of this actually deliver?
I get it. I'm John Hester, the pastor at Calvary Baptist Church here in Bedford, and I'd rather just tell you the truth about who we are than try to sell you on something we're not.
We're a church of about 80 people. We're not the biggest congregation in town, and we're okay with that. What we are is a genuinely close-knit community of families, couples, singles, and seniors who have decided to do life together around the Word of God. We laugh together, we cry together, and on any given Sunday morning, you'll probably see someone's toddler making a break for the aisle during the sermon. It happens. We love it.
Here's what life at Calvary actually looks like for a family.
If you have kids, Wednesday night at Calvary might become your favorite night of the week. Our AWANA program runs every Wednesday evening during the school year — Cubbies for the little ones, Sparks for early elementary, and Truth & Training for kids through sixth grade. AWANA is one of the most effective children's discipleship programs in the world, and our kids absolutely love it. The Grand Prix. The Awards Night. The AWANA Store. These are the kinds of nights your kids will still be talking about when they're grown.
And while your kids are in AWANA, you don't have to sit in the parking lot scrolling through your phone. Our adult Bible study starts at 6:30 PM, and our Student Ministries Pastor, Andrew Blackburn, leads a teen Bible study at the same time. The whole family grows together on Wednesday nights. That's not an accident — it's something we've built intentionally.
We recently launched small groups specifically designed around different seasons of family life. Faith@Home is built for parents with kids still at home — real conversations about faith, parenting, and marriage in a setting that feels more like a living room than a classroom. Groups meet weekly in homes, at the church, and occasionally wherever life takes us. No pressure, no performance. Just an honest community.
I'll be straightforward — I work hard on my sermons. Every Sunday message at Calvary is rooted in the Bible and aimed squarely at real life. Not religious theory. Not guilt trips. Practical, honest teaching that gives you something to actually chew on during the drive home. Our worship service runs at 11:00 AM, and while you're in the sanctuary, your children are in their own age-appropriate program — safe, supervised, and having a genuinely great time.
This might be the most important thing I can tell you. Calvary is not a church for people who have life figured out. It's a church for people who are figuring it out — and who'd rather not do it alone. Whatever your family looks like right now, whatever questions you're carrying, whatever made you start Googling "family church in Bedford Virginia" in the first place — there's a place for you here.
Come see us. We're at 800 Smith Street in Bedford, Virginia. Sundays at 11:00 AM. Visit our I'm New page to know exactly what to expect, or just call the office at (540) 586-3434 and talk to a real person.
We'd love to meet your family.
