Following the True Shepherd
In our recent sermon, we explored the profound imagery of Jesus as the True Shepherd in John 10:1-6. This passage paints a vivid picture of Christ calling His sheep by name, leading them to safety, and offering abundant life amidst a world filled with distracting voices. Let’s dive into the heart of this message and discover how we can follow the True Shepherd in our daily lives.
The True Shepherd vs. Thieves and Robbers
John 10:1-2 – “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.”
Jesus introduces Himself as the lawful Shepherd who enters the sheepfold through the door, fulfilling every prophecy and requirement of Scripture. Unlike the Pharisees—whom He calls thieves and robbers—Jesus came as the promised Messiah, born of a virgin, from the tribe of Judah, in Bethlehem, and obedient to God’s law. His credentials are undeniable, and His voice is trustworthy.
In contrast, the Pharisees misled Israel with their pride and spiritual blindness, much like the false voices in our world today—social media, cultural trends, or even misguided religious claims. These “thieves” seek to steal our joy and distract us from the True Shepherd.
Hearing His Voice
John 10:3-4 – “To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.”
Sheep recognize their shepherd’s voice because they spend time with him. In the same way, we learn to hear Jesus’ voice by immersing ourselves in His Word. The blind man in John 9 responded to Jesus with faith, and his life was transformed. Jesus knows your name and calls you personally—whether you’re feeling lost in the noise of the world or seeking direction.
Reflection: When was a time you sensed Jesus calling you? Maybe it was through a Scripture, a sermon, or a quiet moment of prayer. How can you make space to hear His voice more clearly today?
Action Step: Spend 10 minutes reading John 10:1-6 today. Write down one way you feel God speaking to you.
Fleeing the Strangers’ Voices
John 10:5 – “And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.”
The world is loud with voices vying for our attention—social media influencers, political agendas, and even religious leaders who may not align with God’s truth. Jesus warns us to flee from these strangers. Just as the Pharisees’ voices led to spiritual blindness, today’s distractions can drown out the True Shepherd’s call.
True sheep of the True Shepherd love Him and His Word. By spending time in Scripture, we develop discernment to recognize and reject false voices. As Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Staying rooted in His truth protects us from deception.
Reflection: What voices are influencing you today? Are they pointing you to Christ or pulling you away? How can you guard your heart against these distractions?
Action Step: Identify one source of influence (e.g., a social media account or TV show) and evaluate whether it aligns with Christ’s truth. Take a step to limit its impact if it doesn’t.
The Door to Abundant Life
John 10:10 – “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
Jesus doesn’t just offer safety—He offers abundant life, full of purpose, joy, and eternal hope. Unlike the thieves who seek to destroy, Jesus calls us to trust Him as the door to salvation and a fulfilling life. This requires faith—believing in His death and resurrection—and obedience, confessing Him as Lord (Romans 10:9-10).
“Faith always produces obedience. Will you hear the voice of the Shepherd this morning? He’s calling your name.”
For believers, following Jesus means staying rooted in His Word, guided by His Spirit, and anchored in a Bible-teaching church. These practices help us discern the True Shepherd’s voice and reject the noise of the world.
