He sat at the same table as the Son of God. He heard His voice. He received bread from His hand. And he walked out into the night. This message traces the anatomy of Judas' darkened heart — and confronts every one of us with the sobering reality that the same heart capable of that journey beats in every one of us.
In this sermon — The Darkened Heart: Dealing with Deception — we walk through John 13:21–30 and discover three warnings every heart desperately needs to hear:
- — We must guard against the agitation of our hearts
- — We must reject the trap of our own suppositions
- — We must heed the warning of a darkened heart
Along the way we examine the Greek words that anchor each point — ταράσσω (troubled), πνεῦμα (spirit), μαρτυρέω (testified), ἀπορέω (doubting), δοκέω (thought), εἰσέρχομαι (entered), and νύξ (night) — and discover that the Holy Spirit's word choices are never accidental and always precise.
Whether you are a believer who has been drifting further than you intended, or someone who has not yet come to Christ, this passage has something urgent and personal to say to you.
The night did not fall on Judas. Judas walked into the night.
The question this text leaves with every one of us is simply this — which road will you take when you walk out of this room today?
