John 12:1–19
The Path of True Value

What is the most valuable thing you own? Would you be willing to break it, pour it out, and lose it forever just to honor Jesus? In this message, "The Path of True Value: Worship that Matters," we launch our new series, The Path to the Cross. We step into a small house in Bethany just six days before the Passover, where a dinner party turns into a spiritual audit. The text reveals a "Crisis of Value" centered around two disciples: Mary, who offers a year’s wages in sacrificial worship, and Judas, who hides his greed behind religious excuses. As we study John 12:1–19, we must answer one defining question: Is Jesus a King to be worshipped at any cost, or a threat to be managed? In this sermon, we cover:

  • The Standard of True Value: Why Mary’s "waste" of $50,000 worth of spikenard was the only appropriate response to the Savior.
  • The Deceit of False Value: How Judas used "good causes" like helping the poor to mask his own "hypocritical calculation".
  • The Final Verdict: How the presence of Jesus forces a separation—leading some to total surrender and others to total rejection.

Scripture: John 12:1–19 Series: The Path to the Cross Key Takeaways:

  • Sacrificial worship is never truly sacrificial if it costs us nothing.
  • We must reject the temptation to prioritize our "bag" (comfort/security) over the Savior.
  • You cannot stay neutral; Jesus is the line drawn in the sand of our souls.
